  • Silverthorne council OK's Lowe's
SILVERTHORNE - After seven hours of testimony, discussion and presentations, the Silverthorne Town Council voted 4-2 to approve the final site plan for a Lowe's Home-Improvement Warehouse at the corner of Buffalo Mountain Drive and Wildernest Road.
Several members of the council said the approval amounted to a land-use decision, and that the council's duty was to determine whether the proposed development meets the requirements of the Silverthorne Town Code and the Town Comprehensive Plan.
"What we have before us tonight is not about our personal preferences," Councilmember Bruce Butler said. "If...
  • Fast start, easy win for Summit rugby
FARMER'S FARMER - After missing the season-opening match, Tiger captains Alex Cooper and Heidi Gruber didn't waste much time making their presence felt in Wednesday's showdown with Regis Jesuit.
Both captains scored tries within the first four minutes of the game, and Cooper finished the night with four scores, as Summit cruised to an easy 50-0 win at The Mine.
"It's nice to be back, but it wasn't my tries (that made the difference)," Cooper said afterward. "On all of them, there were passes and good plays, and I was just the...
  • SHS golf: Tigers take title at Keystone Ranch Invite
KEYSTONE - Coaches and players were ducking for cover as the rain pelted the scoring area at Keystone Ranch Golf Course on Wednesday. It was cold and wet and not at all like a good day for golf in Summit County.
Yet, Summit High head coach Gary Sorensen didn't mind it one bit.
"Do I look happy? I'm standing out here grinning like an idiot in the rain, 40-degree rain," Sorensen said. " ... I'm extremely happy and pleased for the boys."
To figure out why, all you had to do was...
  • Pennsylvania Mine tour Friday
The Blue River Watershed Group will conduct a field trip to the Peru Creek area and the Keystone Science School Friday, Sept. 10, for local Rotarians and other interested parties. The trip will provide information on several proposed mine-remediation projects. Attendees will get a chance to see the Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the Silver Spoon mines. The staff of the Keystone Science School will present a demonstration of water quality analysis in Peru Creek.
The group will meet at the Keystone Science School cafeteria, 1628 St. Johns Rd., at 12:15 p.m., and a lunch will be served. After...
  • New German mini-beer garden opens in Frisco
FRISCO - A big fan of German brews, owner Scott Pohlman recently created a beer garden and sausage eatery, Prost, on Main Street in Frisco. It opened last Friday.
"It looks like a beer hall," Pohlman said of his location found next to Tuscato on Main Street. "I wanted to bring something different to Frisco."
Pohlman, who also owns the Cala Inn in Summit Cove, will serve 12 different kinds of sausages and the "finest Bavarian beers around," at Prost for lunch and dinner. The location has a cozy charm, and there's...
  • Voter registration deadline Oct. 4
SUMMIT COUNTY - Local voters will have a fairly long ballot to fill out this November, so Summit County Clerk Kathy Neel is encouraging citizens to take advantage of the vote-by-mail option.
"People can take their time and vote at home, rather than being rushed at the ballot box," Neel said.
November's ballot will feature nine statewide ballot questions, a small handful of local questions, and races for U.S. Senate, U.S. Congress, Colorado governor, state Senate, the state House of Representatives and other offices. Neel and her staff will send out the...
