  • Vail Resorts sees increases in mountain revenue, decline in lodging
SUMMIT COUNTY - Vail Resorts saw modest improvements in its on-mountain financial performance for the second quarter of the 2010 fiscal year, ending Jan. 31, 2010. The on-mountain bottom line improved by 3.6 percent, relative to last year's early season - comprising November, December and January.
Lodging, however, suffered a net-revenue decline of 6 percent, largely because of declines at Keystone, which have been hit the hardest by the economic downturn.
The company's lodging and mountain segments improved their bottom lines by a combined 2 percent over last year's second-quarter performance.

  • Habitat for Humanity says thanks
With over 150 guests in attendance, our fundraiser was a success. We were able to add approximately $6,000 to our building fund for our 2010 Build. • Community roundtable on transportation on Thursday
With this topic receiving considerable media attention lately, Our Future Summit is organizing a community roundtable on transportation Thursday at the Summit County Community and Senior Center to stimulate a lively public discussion on traffic, transit and trucks.

  • Keystone zamboni plunges through ice
KEYSTONE - A Zamboni slipped through the cracks at the Keystone Lake Tuesday night.
Crews were smoothing the surface of the popular skating spot around 6 p.m., when the machine fell part-way through the ice. Workers successfully extricated the Zamboni from the lake the same night and closed the ice to skating.
No one was injured during the incident, and the Zamboni "fired right back up" once it was retrieved, according to Keystone spokesperson Ryan Whaley.
Skating is now done for the season, since temperatures will likely be too warm by the...
  • Appeals court hears arguments on forest roads rule
DENVER - Lawyers for the state of Wyoming and the Colorado Mining Association argued before the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Wednesday that a 2001 federal rule banning construction of new roads on National Forest land violates the law.
The Roadless Rule, initiated under President Clinton's presidency, banned road construction and reconstruction on certain areas of National Forest lands. It affects at least 40 million acres of federal land nationwide.
The appeals court did not indicate when it would decide the case, which was filed by Wyoming to challenge the rule.

  • Glenwood rockslide update: Helicopter helps crews on I-70
Highway workers are using a helicopter today to drop equipment on a mountainside in efforts to dislodge a boulder that's threatening Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon.
The helicopter dropped off drilling equipment and a generator late this morning so a crew can drill, and then blast, a 20-foot wide slab of rock that threatens the highway below.
Mindy Crane, a spokeswoman with the Colorado Department of Transportation, said the crew hopes to have the rock cleared sometime early this afternoon. If the rock blast goes well, workers should be able to start...
